Which parts fit your tractor?

First, let us deal with the general principles on this page. There were two distinct makes of Spark Ignition engine used in Ferguson TE series tractors. The Continental engine (serial numbers prefixed TE only, followed by the number) and the Standard Motor Company engine. Most of the parts we sell on this web site relate to tractors with the 'Standard Motor Company' engine. We do have some parts for the Continental engine (fitted up until 1948 alongside the Standard engined tractors). These are marked accordingly.

There were a number of TE-A 20 tractors converted to Diesel with Perkins 3 cylinder Diesel engines. Although we sell tractor parts for these, we do not sell much in the way of engine parts for them. ALWAYS contact us by telephone before buying unless you are certain that the engine you have is the one listed.

The earlier, Standard engined (there were many Continental engines produced in this period up to serial number 48000) TE-A 20 tractors were fitted with an 80mm engine. These changed slightly mid 1948 when the vertical oil filter was changed (at serial number 56338) for one mounted at an angle. The early TE-A 20 had a 6 volt system; changing to 12volt, along with the other tractors in the range, at serial number 200,001. Some TE-A 20's were converted to run on petrol-start/TVO-run. These examples have dual fuel tank (with 2 filler caps) or seperate petrol fuel tanks, heat shroud around the manifiold and increased combustion chamber volume (usually created by adding spacers to the head gasket and longer valve push rods), and should never be run on neat petrol for any length of time.

The TE-D 20 85mm Standard engined tractors were all 6 volt until serial number 200,001 when the 12 volt electrical system was introduced. This tractor was designed to run on petrol-start/Tractor Vapourising Oil-run. If you try to run it hard on petrol all the time it will get too hot, may burn out valves and will tend to be weak and feeble. When you run it on petrol only, then remove the heat sheild from arund the manifold to keep the temperature of the incoming fuel down a bit, but bear in mind that the compression ratios are NOT suitable for running on petrol under load.

When you come to order parts, you need to know if you have a 80mm or 85mm engine. Most parts for 80mm engines fit all 80mm engines and most parts for 85mm engines fit all 85mm engines. Many parts fit both 80mm and 85mm engines. Many of the limited number of changes during the production run are listed below. Valves are of particular interest when changes occured during production of the 85mm Petrol/TVO engines. If you have any doubts, you are very welcome to phone us on Freephone 0808 131 2867 or 01692 582 292

Continental Engine numbering

Continental engines are prefixed Z120 and tend to be numbered approximately 10000 higher than tractor serial numbers to which they relate.
These tractors are designated the TE 20.

These engines were fitted to tractors designated:-
TE 20 (Normal Width)
TE B 20 (Narrow)

Standard Motor Company Engine number ranges

80mm petrol engine from S1E - S100204E (up to tractor serial number TE A 172598) 23.9HP. The combustion chamber of these engines is almost round. There is much more cut out of this chamber than the later engines. The depth, however, is shallower, being about 0.75". The top of the head is marked only with an X. Both the Inlet and the Exhaust valve throats were 1 1/8" in diameter. The valve lift was 0.270". Later engines are different.

These engines were fitted to tractors designated:-
TE-A 20 (Standard, Normal Width)
TE-C 20 (Narrow)
TE-K 20 (Vineyard)

As far as we can tell, when changing to the 85mm engine, they re-started numbering from the nearest round number

-----

85mm petrol engine S100501E - S117000E (up to S112390E were 6volt) then SC1E - onwards, 28.2HP These engines are all of the squish action Cylinder Head and Water Delivery Tube type. Water pump on Head to deliver direct into tube. The combustion chamber in these heads are oval in shape and only 1.1" deep being 6:1 compression ratio. The letters SM 2 are cast into the top, beneath the rocker cover. All 85mm engines have a valve lift of 0.2985", which is greater than the 80mm engines. It retains the 1 1/8" Valve Throat Diameter.

219222 TE 20 series Ferguson tractors had Standard petrol engines. When we include the Continental engines, that brings petrol tractors to over 1/2 of total production.

Not envisaging such a long run of petrol engines, VO engine numbers started at S120501E. Once it was realised that petrol engines were still very much in demand (they were VERY good after all. ed.) and petrol engine numbers were going to ovetake VO engine numbers, the numbering of petrol engines had to take this into account and a new range prefixed SC was started.

These engines were fitted to tractors designated:-
TE-A 20 (Standard, Normal Width)
TE-C 20 (Narrow)
TE-K 20 (Vineyard)
TE-P 20 (Full Industrial)

85mm Petrol/Vapourising Oil engine all Versions numbered from S120501 - Onwards

Versions 1 & 2 are engines numbered S120501E - S170173E.

..Firstly Version 1 with non-squish action cylinder head. Valve throat as 80mm engines (that is 1 1/8" for both inlet and exhaust) Water pump mounted on the cylinder block. Compression Ratio 4.8:1 to accomodate V.O. fuel 23.9HP as per 80mm petrol version.

..Then Version 2, as the version 1, but with valve throat diameters: inlet 1 1/16", Exhaust 15/16", 23.9HP covering versions 1 & 2.

..Then Version 3 from S170174E - S225311E, with a compression ratio raised to 5.1:1 and a Max Belt HP of 25.4 H.P.. This engine was fitted with a "squish" action cylinder head. Water tube in Cylinder Head. Valve throat diameter: Inlet 1" Exhaust 15/16". The depth of the combustion chamber on these seems to be about 1.38" The top of the head is marked SM2 and NTVO. The chamber is roughly oval.

..Finally Version 4 from S225312E onwards (the final version) was the same as version 3 except that the Inlet valve throats were increased to 1 1/8" and ports in the cylinder head and manifold were modified to suit. Riser bore in manifold changed from 24mm dia to 28mm diameter. The depth of the combustion chamber on these seems to be about 1.38" The top of the head is marked SM1 and NTVO. The chamber is roughly oval.

These engines were fitted to tractors designated:-
TE-D 20 (Standard)
TE-E 20 (Narrow)
TE-L 20 (Vineyard)
TE-R 20 (Full Industrial)

-----

Diesel SA1E - SA118634E 26HP

These engines were fitted to tractors designated:-
TE-F 20 (Standard)
TE-G 20 (Narrow)
TE-N 20 (Vineyard)
TE-T 20 (Full Industrial)

-----

85mm Petrol/Lamp oil (Zero Octane parrafin. It should be noted that very few Lamp Oil engines will be found in the UK, where the climate is rarely hot enough to run on parrafin. To call a TE D 20 Petrol/Parrafin is just plain wrong). These Engines (for export to hot climates ONLY) were numbered SB1E - (Approx.) SB13000E (up to SB2732 were 6 volt) and are 22.1HP

The tractors fitted with these engines were designated:-
TE-H 20 (Standard)
TE-J 20 (Narrow)
TE-M 20 (Vineyard)
TE-S 20 (Full Industrial)

Industrial Variations

The Industrial Tractor is designed for use in the industrial world, for work in factories, docks and on public highways. All of the features of the Agricultural Tractor have been retained and it is capable of using a range of Ferguson equipment.

Several versions of the Industrial Tractor have been marketed.

Fundamentally, these machins are identical with the agricultural tractors, employing the same engine, transmission, gears and hudraulic system, with additional erquipment incorporated to make them suitable for work under industrial conditions and to comply with legal requirements for the public highway.
