Some Quick Fixes, which will make your
TE 20 series Ferguson Tractor work better

The TE 20 series of Ferguson tractor is not the most powerful tractor in the world, but it is powerful enough to do all the jobs it was designed to do, provided you use Ferguson Approved implements from The Ferguson System. I'm sure most of you will know that Mr Ferguson was keen to keep his tractor light on the soil so as to avoid unnecessary soil compaction and damage. For this reason, the TE 20 series is just powerful enough to do the job. There is no horsepower wasted and the engine is not too big. We could, all of us, get a vintage tractor with much more grunt, but it will probably do no more work and wouldn't do it as well. The Ferguson System is exceptionally clever and needs only the power provided by the TE 20 series tractor.

As a result of all I have said above, you will see that it is important to ensure that your tractor and implements are in good working order if you are to get the best out of them and show your Ferguson tractor off at it's best. We are all emissaries of The Ferguson System and have a responsibility to history to make the best possible job of promoting The Ferguson System by demonstrating it at peak performance. Most problems with ploughing and other soil manipulation work used to be to do with shares and points that were mal-aligned, worn or damaged. These days, many people need to service their tractors to bring them back to peak condition for any kind of work. Remember your tractor is around 50 years old and needs to be brought back to WORKING order, not just given a blow over with a paint gun. A nice paint job is all very well and very nice to see, but there is no reason why your tractor shouldn't do it's stuff as well. It's all about Horse Power per Acre. In these modern days, efficiency is appreciated with even deeper understanding than it was 50 years ago. Help to keep our planet clean!

The following little jobs are easy to do and will make a tremendous difference to your little Ferguson:-

Engine
*Valve grinding
*Valve timing (a new timing chain makes a world of difference)
*Ignition timing (don't forget the springs in your distributor)
*Water cooling (especially with the TVO and LO models)
*Injector pump and injectors (Diesel models); and have them done by a professional
Clean fuel tanks and filters
Fresh engine oil and filters at regular intervals
*Carburettor adjustments

Hydraulics
*Lift gear quadrant Settings
*Hydraulic pump gaskets throughout
*Adjust sensor spring
Control Valve
Pressure relief valve

The items marked * are those most likely to make a big difference to the average vintage Ferguson tractor.

The short answer to your next question is ... "yes, you can do it", all you need is a decent manual. You can get all the parts you need from us by phone or over the Internet. None of these little jobs are especially expensive; all of them will make a huge difference to performance.

Even taking the head off is a simple task on a Ferguson tractor. There is nothing for the average, intelligent, educated person to fear with any of these jobs. I would, however, send the head off to a specialist to cut and grind the valves. The cost is about £40.00 and worth every penny. You will be best advised to get a local company to do that for you.
